This is a unique instrument, a 1974 Martin T-28 tipple that has been converted into a tenor ukulele!

Martin's tipple is a rare 10-string, 4-course instrument developed with inspiration from South American instruments, against the backdrop of the ukulele boom of the 1920s. At the time, it was valued for producing a louder sound and more brilliant tone with the same fingering as a ukulele, and in the 1930s and 40s, it played an active role as a rhythm instrument, adding depth to jazz, swing, and blues ensembles. Like guitars, there were model numbers such as 17, 18, and 28, based on materials and decoration styles.

The T-28 continued to be produced in small numbers, with a total of 489 units manufactured throughout Martin's history, and 48 units were made in 1974, the year this instrument was produced. Like the D-28 guitar, it uses Sitka spruce and Indian rosewood, boasts a robust vintage construction and powerful sound, and is in beautiful condition with almost no scratches.

For this instrument, the T-28 bridge saddle was replaced with one of the same shape to accommodate a standard 4-string tenor ukulele setup, and Gotoh slotted tuners, provided by Seilen, were installed. The modification work was handled by Mitsuki Kunioka of Sun Guitars, a luthier in Hiroshima Prefecture. Mr. Kunioka served as the chief repairman for a Martin guitar importer for 25 years before becoming independent, and continues to repair vintage Martin guitars, making him a true expert on Martin instruments.

Although it has been modified as a tenor ukulele to be easier for modern players to play, all original tipple parts have been kept, so it is possible to revert it to its original state.

Recommended for those who want to enjoy old-style jazz, swing, or singing with accompaniment.

Martin

Martin ukulele is a traditional brand that was first produced in 1915 by CF Martin & Co., a long-established American guitar manufacturer. The brand was born during the Hawaiian music boom, and many models were released in the 1920s and 1930s. Many ukuleles manufactured up until the 1960s are still immensely popular in the vintage market today.
Production ceased in the 1970s, but was revived in the 2000s with the resurgence in popularity of the ukulele. They now produce reissue models and more affordable entry-level models.
