ANTAR instruments are crafted by veteran builder Mr. Kaoru Aoki, whose workshop is located in Tachikawa City, Tokyo. This particular model is a soprano ukulele show model that was exhibited at the Tokyo Handcraft Guitar Fes.
ANTAR instruments are generally one-of-a-kind, each possessing a unique character. This instrument, too, strongly reflects Mr. Aoki's artistic sensibility.
The body uses figured sapele with a striking, beautiful grain. Furthermore, by using sapele for the neck, fretboard, and bridge as well, the instrument fully showcases the inherent beauty of the wood itself.
In terms of design, the rosette, intricately carved like a delicate floral pattern, is eye-catching. Wood with sapwood is used for the soundhole ring, on which four mother-of-pearl stars are arranged. The top features a thin black celluloid purfling, and the end section is adorned with an ornament-like decoration. Mother-of-pearl stars also embellish this section, and the position markers are likewise unified with stars.
The headstock features a figured sapele veneer and is adorned with mother-of-pearl moon and star inlays. The decoration extending from the rosette to the fretboard and headstock conveys a consistent theme, as if telling a story inspired by the night sky.
The sound offers a pleasant, deep sustain that resonates beautifully, allowing for a rich sound despite its soprano size. Equipped with Gotoh UPT pegs, it also offers excellent tuning stability.
This show model, exhibited at the Tokyo Handcraft Guitar Fes, expresses ANTAR's unique character and worldview in both its appearance and sound.
